Biography

Clive Bell is an English flutist and music critic who was born in London, England, in 1950. He achieved early professional recognition in 1979 with the release of his debut studio recording and is famous for his mastery of the shakuhachi and for serving as the president of the London Musicians' Collective (1998–2003). Bell studied the shakuhachi in Japan for two years under Kōhachiro Miyata and has collaborated with artists including Rié Yanagisawa and Peter Cusack. He has been a member of ensembles including Kahondo Style, Accordions Go Crazy, and British Summer Time Ends. His discography includes the studio recordings Downhill (1979), Kurokami: Traditional Music (1988), and Eating (1997). He also released three albums as a member of the duo Numb & Number starting in 2007. Bell serves as a music critic for the publication The Wire.
