MarÃa Rosario Pilar MartÃnez Molina Baeza, known professionally as Charo, was born on 15 January 1951 in Murcia, Spain. She began playing classical Spanish-style guitar at nine under Andrés Segovia and entered show business after a convent teacher urged her to pursue music. Her first U.S. exposure came in the mid-1960s on television, and she married bandleader Xavier Cugat in 1966, moving to the United States. Charoâs recording career launched with the disco-infused single "Dance a Little Bit Closer" in 1977, which reached Number 18 on the U.S. Dance chart and number 44 in the UK. She released the album Cuchi-Cuchi the same year, followed by Olé Olé (1978), Bailando con Charo (1981), and the critically acclaimed album Guitar Passion (1994), which earned Billboardâs Female Pop Album of the Year and Best Female Latin Pop Album awards. Subsequent releases included Gusto (1997) and Charo and Guitar (2005). Charoâs popularity peaked in the late 1970s, with frequent appearances on The Love Boat and other American variety shows, and she continued to record and perform into the 2000s, including the 2008 single "España Cañi" and her 2017 appearance on Dancing with the Stars. Her career spans five decades of music and television, marked by chart success, award recognition, and enduring international visibility.
