Biography

Carroll Richard Gibbons was an American pianist, composer, and bandleader who was born in 1903 in Clinton, Massachusetts. He traveled to London in his late teens to study at the Royal Academy of Music and returned to the city in 1924 as a relief pianist for the Boston Orchestra during an engagement at the Savoy Hotel. Gibbons settled in Britain and became the co-leader of the Savoy Orpheans alongside Howie Jacobs until 1927. After working as the Director of Light Music at His Master's Voice, he led the New MayFair Orchestra. Gibbons assumed sole leadership of the Savoy Hotel Orpheans in 1932 and recorded hundreds of popular songs with them, many featuring vocals by Anne Lenner. His own compositions include the songs “A Garden in the Rain” (1928) and “On the Air” (1932). He continued as the bandleader at the Savoy until 1950 and served as the hotel director of entertainments until his death. Gibbons died in 1954 in London.
