Biography

Carrie Louise Smith, born on August 25, 1925, in Fort Gaines, Georgia, was an American singer known for her contributions to jazz and blues. She began her career as a member of the church choir and gained early recognition performing at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957. In the 1960s, Smith appeared on TV Gospel Time, a television show aimed at Black audiences. Her breakthrough came in the 1970s with singing with Big Tiny Little and her performance alongside Bessie Smith in Dick Hyman's Satchmo Remembered at Carnegie Hall in 1974. Throughout her career, Smith released several albums, including Do Your Duty (1977), When You're Down and Out (1977), and Fine & Mellow (1983). She also performed with notable artists such as Tyree Glenn and Yank Lawson. Carrie Louise Smith passed away on May 20, 2012.
