Nilton César (born Nilton Guimarães on June 27, 1939, in Ituiutaba) was a Brazilian romantic singer closely associated with the Jovem Guarda-era circuit and the broader âbregaâ tradition. He began releasing records in the early 1960s, issuing a run of LPs for Continental before moving into a late-1960s/1970s streak on RCA Victor that defined his national profile, with albums including Nilton César I (1964), Com Alma e Coração (1965), A Volta do Professor (1966), and Dois Num Só Coração (1968). In 1969 he scored his signature hit with the Osmar Navarro co-write âFérias na Ãndia,â a song that became a major sales driver and was widely cited for passing the 500,000-copies mark and generating multiple gold-record distinctions in its era. Through the 1970s and early 1980s he kept a steady album cadenceâtitles like Nilton César V (1971) and Amor... Amor... Amor... (1973)âwhile remaining a familiar presence on major Brazilian TV, including Programa Silvio Santos and Jovem Guarda. His discography continued across changing labels and markets into the 2000s with O Homem Também Chora (2003) and No Limite da Paixão (2004), then later catalog projects such as Sapato Apertado (2014). His last credited release arrived in 2025 with the duet-focused album Brega Duetos (Vol. 4) with Orlando Dias. Nilton César died on January 28, 2026, in São Paulo.
