Biography

Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, The Buttless Chaps made a name for themselves in the Canadian indie rock scene with their distinct blend of punk, new wave, and alternative country music. Formed in 1998, the band consisted of Dave Gowans on vocals, guitar, and banjo, Morgan McDonald on keyboards, Lasse Lutick on guitar and synthesizer, Torben Wilson on the drums, and multi-instrumentalist Ida Nilsen on vocals, accordion, synthesizer, and euphonium. The band's journey began with the release of their critically acclaimed self-titled CD in 1998, followed by Tumblewire, released via Lonesome Cowboy Music in 1999. Their third full-length album, 2001's Death Scenes I II III, further diversified their eclectic country sound while showcasing their maturity as songwriters. After signing with Mint Records, The Buttless Chaps returned in 2003 with Love This Time, a pop-adjacent project that sprinkled their alt-country leanings with elements from new wave and indie pop. 2006 was a significant year for the group as they released Where Night Holds Light, which received heavy airplay on campus and community radio. Their growing popularity led to a feature on CBC Radio 3's Sessions in June 2007, highlighting their rising status in the indie music scene. The band would release one more LP on Mint, 2008's Cartography, before finally parting ways in 2009. Following their disbandment, each member pursued new paths: McDonald joined Fond of Tigers, Nilsen moved to Great Aunt Ida and The Violet Archers, Wilson to Clean and Pristine the NOEX Castaway, and Gowans to Cloudsplitter. Interestingly, Gowans and Lutick later became co-owners of the Vancouver record store Red Cat Records, continuing their musical journey in a different realm.
