Biography

The Rural Alberta Advantage's blend of indie-folk and indie-rock earned the group a handful of Top 40 singles on the Canada Rock chart throughout the 2010s, as well as a nomination for the Polaris Music Prize in 2011. Formed by vocalist/guitarist Nils Edenloff, keyboardist/bassist Amy Cole, and drummer Paul Banwatt in Toronto, Canada, in 2005, the group released a self-titled EP one year later, followed by the debut album Hometowns in 2008. Hometowns' popularity attracted the attention of Saddle Creek Records, who signed The Rural Alberta Advantage in 2009 and reissued the album that same year. The sophomore album Departing followed in 2011, charting at Number 4 on the Top Heatseekers chart and Number 30 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. It also earned the band a nomination for Canada's Polaris Music Prize that same year. 2014's Mended with Gold reached Number 8 on Top Heatseekers and featured the single "Terrified," which became The Rural Alberta Advantage's first Top 40 hit on the Canada Rock chart. Three years later, the band earned three additional Canadian hits with The Wild, which featured the singles "White Lights" (number 36), "Brother" (Number 31), and "Bad Luck Again" (number 34). The Rural Alberta Advantage returned to the Canadian charts once again in 2022, when "Candu" and "AB Bride" were both released. The double-sided single reached number 49 and was followed by the group's fifth studio album, The Rise & The Fall, in 2023.
