Biography

Butch Thompson, born Richard Enos Thompson on November 28, 1943, in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota, was an American jazz pianist and clarinetist. In 1962, he joined the New Orleans Jazz Band of the Hall Brothers and began performing regularly. He began leading the Butch Thompson Trio in the 1960s and was the original pianist and regular on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion from 1974 to 1986. Notable solo releases include If You Don't Shake (Echoes from Storyville, Volume One) (1984), Plays Jelly Roll Morton Piano Solos (1996), and Vicksburg Blues (2012). Thompson toured extensively in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s. He passed away on August 14, 2022 in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
