Biography
Burro Banton (born Donovan Spalding on December 27, 1956, in Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican dancehall and reggae deejay who rose to prominence during the digital dancehall boom of the 1980s. He began performing on sound systems in the late 1970s before joining Gemini, Volcano, Kilimanjaro, and other influential crews. His debut album, Buro (1983), launched a recording career that included The Original Banton (1995). Burro is best known for the hit single "Boom Wah Dis," originally released through Super Cat's Wild Apache label and later re-recorded with producers Steely & Clevie on the "Street Sweeper" riddim. He also scored popular songs, including "Washington Session," "Tek a Set," and "Westmoreland Sensi." Burro has toured extensively across Asia, Europe, and North America and has influenced later dancehall artists, including Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, and Elephant Man.
