Biography

Bucks Fizz created one of the most enduring images of the Eurovision Song Contest when Bobby G and Mike Nolan memorably ripped off the skirts of Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston in their winning performance of Making Your Mind Up in 1981. The group had been formed by songwriters Nichola Martin and Andy Hill specifically to sing the song, which became a Number 1 all over Europe, sparking a run of hits like Piece Of The Action, One Of Those Nights, The Land Of Make Believe and My Camera Never Lies. Success faltered after a serious coach crash near Newcastle in December, 1984 and their troubles were accelerated by the acrimonious departure of Aston. She was replaced by Shelley Preston and the group returned to the charts in 1986 with New Beginning (Mamba Seyra) but Preston left in 1989 leaving the rest to continue as a trio. Baker quit in 1993 when her career as a TV presenter took off and various line-up changes followed. Later members included ex-Dollar singer David Van Day and in 2004, the one remaining original Bobby G reunited Baker, Nolan and Preston for occasional shows as the Original Bucks Fizz with even Aston returning to the fold in 2009.
