Biography

The New York based hip-hop trio Black Moon (comprised of Buckshot, DJ Evil Dee, and 5FT) came up with such notable acts as Wu-Tang Clan and The Notorious B.I.G. They launched their first single, “Who Got Da Props?”, in 1992. That song, which climbed to number 86 on the pop chart and the top 30 on the rap chart, would appear on their first album, 1993’s Enta da Stage, but in that time the group’s sound had evolved into something noticeably more menacing. The album utilized a distinctive low-fi sound and included that first single, but also showcased their progression on tracks like “How Many MC’s…”. The group members pursued separate interests and became associated with the hip-hop collective Boot Camp Clik. During their layoff, a legal battle ensued over the right to the name Black Moon. All of this is why their sophomore album, War Zone, did not come out until 1999. It climbed to number 35 on the main album chart, and number 9 on the R&B album chart. Their third album, 2003’s Total Eclipse, maintained their reputation as kings of the underground rap scene who had never broken through to the mainstream. Sixteen years would pass before Black Moon returned with Rise of Da Moon.
