Hailing from Claremont, California, and consisting of John Darnielle (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Peter Hughes (bass, backing vocals), Jon Wurster (drums), and Matt Douglas (multi-instrumentalist), the American indie rock band The Mountain Goats began their career in 1991. After a few limited-edition releases, the 1994 studio album Zopilote Machine officially marked the start of the bandâs discography. This was regularly expanded with the albums Sweden (1995), Nothing for Juice (1996), Full Force Galesburg (1997), and The Coronerâs Gambit (2000). In 2002, The Mountain Goats made their first appearance on the U.S. charts with All Hail West Texas (peaking at No. 140), while Tallahassee, released the same year, marked the beginning of a collaboration with the 4AD label, which allowed the quartet to release a series of more high-profile and critically acclaimed albums, such as Get Lonely (2006) and Heretic Pride (2008). The band achieved its highest U.S. chart position in 2015 with the release of Beat the Champ (No. 65), a concept album about John Darnielleâs childhood obsession with professional wrestling. The Mountain Goats have since consistently released new albums, never failing to reinvent themselves with each recording. Notable releases include Goths (2017), In League with Dragons (2019), Getting Into Knives (2020), Dark in Here (2021), Bleed Out (2022), Jenny from Thebes (2023), and Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan (2025). In 2026, The Mountain Goats released a cover EP with Mary Chapin Carpenter featuring âPut the Message in the Boxâ and âMigrations.â On August 7, the band released Days, their twenty-fourth studio album, produced by John Congleton and preceded by several singles, including âCharlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds,â âShallow Grave,â and âCandlebox.â
