Biography

Tycoon was an American rock band from New York City, formed in the late 1970s. The group consisted of Norman Mershon on vocals and guitar, Jon Gordon on guitar, Bobby Messano on guitar and vocals, Mark Rivera on saxophone and vocals, Keith Taylor on keyboards, Mark Kreider on bass, violin, and vibes, and Richard Steinberg or Mike Braun on drums. Tycoon's breakthrough came with their eponymous debut album Tycoon, released in 1979 on Arista Records. Produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the album featured the Top 40 hit single "Such a Woman", which peaked at Number 26 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached Number 99 in Australia. The success of "Such a Woman" helped propel Tycoon to reach Number 41 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and Number 59 on the Australian Kent Music Report. Their second album, Turn Out The Lights, was released in 1981 and produced by Vini Poncia. Although Tycoon did not achieve further significant chart success, their contributions to rock music remain notable. In addition to their studio albums, Tycoon also released a self-produced album titled Opportunity Knocks in 1983, which was made available through the It's About Music website.
