Betty Johnson, born on March 16, 1929, in Guilford County, North Carolina, was an American singer. She started her career as part of the Johnson Family Singers, a group that included her parents and three brothers, performing religious material. The family won a singing contest in Charlotte, leading to a contract with WBT (AM), where they broadcast from 1938 to 1951. Betty also did solo work on the station starting in 1943. Johnson's professional breakthrough came when she signed with Bell Records in 1954, releasing her debut album My Restless Lover / The Man Upstairs. She then moved to RCA Victor in 1955, where she released several albums including "I Dreamed", which became one of her biggest hits. In Chicago, Johnson worked with Eddy Arnold on his syndicated television series, Eddy Arnold Time, and appeared on Don McNeill's Breakfast Club from 1955 to 1957. She was hired by Jack Paar for his show Tonight. Her notable singles include "I Want Eddie Fisher For Christmas" (1954) and "Little Blue Man" (1958). Johnson continued her career with appearances on various television shows until 1962. She returned to show business in 1993, appearing at the Algonquin Hotel in New York and starting her own record label, Bliss Tavern Music. Betty Johnson died at her home in South Carolina on November 6, 2022, at the age of 93.
