Bashful Brother Oswald was the stage name of Beecher Ray Kirby, an American country musician born in 1911 who popularized the resonator guitar and Dobro. He learned guitar and banjo as a child and began developing his slide style after seeing the Hawaiian guitarist Rudy Waikiki perform. Kirby joined Roy Acuffâs band, the Smoky Mountain Boys, in 1938 and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry on New Yearâs Day (1939). He adopted the clownish Oswald persona to serve as the fictional chaperone for the band's banjoist, Rachel Veach. Beyond his instrumentation, his tenor vocals appeared on hits such as âPrecious Jewelâ and âWreck on the Highwayâ. His debut solo studio album, Bashful Brother Oswald, was released in 1962 through Starday Records. During the 1970s, he joined Rounder Records, releasing several recordings including Carry Me Back (1999). Kirby collaborated with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on the albums Will the Circle be Unbroken (1972) and Will the Circle be Unbroken: Volume Two (1989). He died in 2002.
