Biography

Bal-Sagoth was an English symphonic black metal band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Conceived in 1989 by vocalist Byron Roberts, the group was officially formed in 1993 when Roberts met brothers Chris and Jonny Maudling. The band's name is derived from Robert E. Howard's short story “The Gods of Bal-Sagoth”. After recording their first demo in late 1993, they signed with Cacophonous Records and released their debut studio album, A Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria, in 1995. They followed with Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule (1996) and Battle Magic (1998). In March 1997, the group embarked on the Starfire Engulfs Europe Tour. They subsequently signed with Nuclear Blast to release The Power Cosmic (1999) and Atlantis Ascendant (2001). Their sixth and final studio album, The Chthonic Chronicles, was released in March 2006.
