Biography

Attica Blues, formed in 1994 by producers D'Afro and Tony Nwachukwu, emerged from London’s underground scene; the duo later recruited Egyptian‑born Roba El‑Essawy as vocalist. Their breakthrough came with the 1995 single "Blueprint" on Mo' Wax, establishing a trip‑hop sound that blended electronic textures with downtempo rhythms. In 1997 the self‑titled album Attica Blues and the single "Tender" were released, followed by the 2000 Columbia album Test. Don't Test and the single "What Do You Want?" Collaborations included remixes for Ultra Naté, Sneaker Pimps, Silent Poets and DJ Krush, while the group also toured the UK and Europe promoting their releases. Their early work remains significant within the UK trip‑hop genre, and their association with Mo' Wax has secured a recognized place in electronic music history.
