Biography
The Format was formed in 2002 in Peoria, Arizona by vocalist Nate Ruess and multiâinstrumentalist Sam Means, who had known each other since grade school. Their breakthrough came with the single "The First Single" released on 2003â10â14, which gained local airplay on Phoenix station KEDJ and led to a contract with Elektra Records. The band released their debut album Interventions + Lullabies on 2003â10â21, selling over 100,000 copies in the United States. In 2006 they selfâreleased Dog Problems through The Vanity Label, which achieved significant critical acclaim and prompted tours supporting The All American Rejects and international shows in Tokyo. After a hiatus announced in 2008, The Format reunited in 2020 for a live tour that was ultimately cancelled due to the pandemic. In 2025, they announced their third studio album, Boycott Heaven, scheduled for release on 2026â01â23. The bandâs work is noted for its blend of indie, alternative, punk, and folk influences, and for collaborations with producers such as R. Walt Vincent and Steven Shane McDonald.
