April + VISTA is a Washington, D.C.âbased genre-bending duo formed by vocalist, violinist, and pianist April George and producer/bassist Matthew Thompson. The two connected after graduating from Hampton University, initially collaborating through SoundCloud around 2014. Their early releases leaned toward smooth alternative R&B, but over time their sound evolved into darker, more experimental territory, shaped by layered electronics and introspective songwriting. Blending elements of trip-hop, jazz, gospel, and indie rock, April + VISTA describe their approach as âgenrelessâ experimental soul. Aprilâs airy yet grounded vocals are central to the duoâs identity, often accompanied by her own string arrangements, while VISTA crafts textured electronic backdrops and bass-driven grooves. Their 2018 project You Are Here established their atmospheric style, followed by the more shadowed and emotionally complex Pit of My Dreams in 2021. In 2023, they collaborated with Little Dragon on Slipping Into Color, further expanding their sonic reach. The 2026 album Traditional Noise marked another shift toward bolder, layered production, including the track "STANDING IN PLACE", which explores themes of anxiety and emotional stasis. Having toured with artists such as Little Dragon, Little Simz, and GoldLink, April + VISTA continue refining their immersive, boundary-blurring sound.
