Angelica Sanchez (born 1972) is an American jazz and post-bop pianist and composer from Phoenix, Arizona. Following piano and composition studies at Arizona State University (1990â1994), Sanchez relocated to New York City in 1994. She established a long-term collaboration with saxophonist Tony Malaby and drummer Tom Rainey, recording live albums in Brooklyn in 2003. Sanchez released her debut album as a bandleader, Mirror Me, in 2003, featuring Michael Formanek. Her discography includes Life Between (2008), the duet Twine Forest (2013) with Wadada Leo Smith, and Float the Edge (2017). Her 2022 trio album, Sparkle Beings, was ranked number 8 on The New York Times list of best jazz albums of the year. A member of Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra, Sanchez also leads a nonet, releasing the album Nighttime Creatures in 2023. She has collaborated with artists including Susie Ibarra, Tim Berne, Mario Pavone, and Marilyn Crispell.
