Biography

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Andrew Wasylyk is the stage name of composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Mitchell (b. 1982). Classically trained, he studied violin and cello before taking up guitar in his teens. He first came to prominence in the late 1990s as a member of The Hazey Janes, with whom he recorded several albums, before collaborating with other musicians in bands such as Idlewild, School of Language and The Electric Soft Parade. He took Andrew Wasylyk as his artist name, in homage to his Ukrainian grandfather, and launched his solo career in 2015 with the album Soroky. His music then takes a different direction, blending elements of ambient, jazz, classical and post-rock in a minimalist, instrumental format on subsequent albums Themes for Buildings and Spaces (2017), The Paralian (2019), Fugitive Light and Themes of Consolation (2020), Balgay Hill: Morning in Magnolia (2021), Hearing the Water Before Seeing the Falls (2022) and Parallel Light (2023). In 2024, he collaborated with visual artist and sound installer Tommy Perman on Ash Grey and the Gull Glides On, before producing the solo album Irreparable Parables (2026).
