Biography
A Norwegian saxophonist born in Oslo on April 25, 1971, Trygve Seim is a musician trained in the school of contemporary music. A student at the Trondheim Conservatory, he went on to study composition, and in 1991 formed the group Airamero with Christian Wallumrod, Johannes Eick and Per Oddvar Johansen. After recording an album, Trygve Seim joined pianist Jon Balke's band, which took the name 1300 Oslo, and collaborated on albums by The Source collective, where he was reunited with Johansen, alongside Oyvind Braekke and Mats Eilersten. More and more collaborations followed, before he recorded his first album as a leader for the ECM label, Different Rivers (2000), which won the German Jazz Critics' Prize. Subsequent albums, The Source and Different Cikadas (2002), Sangam (2004) and Yeraz (2008), brought him into contact with musicians from different horizons and broadened his palette towards traditional music, experimental jazz and contemporary composition. In 2010, the album Purcor - Songs for Saxophone and Piano saw him collaborate with Andreas Utnem, before two recordings drawing their inspiration from traditional songs, Rumi Songs (2016) with mezzo-soprano Tora Augestad and Helsinki Songs (2018). In addition to forming his own ensemble, Trygve Seim has performed with the Iro Haarla Quintet, Sinnika Langeland's Starflowers and the Jai Shankar Ensemble.
