Today was formed in 1988 by Frederick Lee âBubbaâ Drakeford, Larry âChiefâ Singletary, Wesley âWesâ Adams, and Larry âLoveâ McCain, childhood friends from Englewood, Newâ¯Jersey. Their early collaboration began as the Gents in 1984, but after meeting producer Teddy Riley at an antiâdrug benefit, the group was renamed Today and signed to MCA Records. Their debut studio album Today (1988) yielded the R&B hit "Him or Me" (U.S. R&B Numberâ¯3) and the chartâtopping single "Girl I Got My Eyes On You" (U.S. R&B Numberâ¯1, UK Numberâ¯94). In 1990, the group released The New Formula, featuring the topâ10 single "Why You Get Funky on Me" (U.S. R&B Numberâ¯2) and "I Got The Feeling" (U.S. R&B Numberâ¯12). Following the release of their second album, the group disbanded; Frederick Lee âBubbaâ Drakeford pursued a solo career as Bigâ¯Bub, while Larry âChiefâ Singletary, Wesley âWesâ Adams, and Larry âLoveâ McCain focused on songwriting. In 2010, the four members reunited, shifting toward gospel and releasing the single "Orchestrate".
