Allan James Clayton, born 1981 in the United Kingdom, is a tenor who began as a chorister at Worcester Cathedral before studying at St John's College, Cambridge. He entered the public eye as a BBC Radioâ¯3 New Generation Artist (2007â2009) and first appeared on record in Verdi's Otello conducted by Sir Colin Davis, released in 2010. He followed up with Britten: Serenad for Tenor, Horn and Strings (2016), Handel: Acis and Galatea (2018), Liszt: The Complete Songs, Vol. 5 (2018), Britten: Sinfonia da Requiem conducted by Simon Rattle (2024), the Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah with Antonio Pappano (2024), and an acclaimed interpretation of Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius with Edward Gardner, released in 2025. Allan Clayton also recorded various recitals, including Where'er You Walk: Arias for Handel's Favourite Tenor (2016). In 2018 he received the Royal Philharmonic Society Singer Award, and in 2021 was appointed MBE for services to opera. In 2026, he partnered with conductor Nicholas Collon and the Aurora Orchestra to perform Schubert's Winterreise, as arranged for orchestra by Hans Zender in 1993.
