Nicky Spence is a Scottish tenor renowned for his vocal power, expressive precision and striking stage presence. Born in Dumfries in 1983, he made his debut in the world of music at a very early age, before continuing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, then at the National Opera Studio. Endowed with a generous temperament and a wide vocal range, he quickly established himself on the great British and international opera stages. He excelled in roles from the JanáÄek, Strauss and Wagner repertoires, embodying complex characters with intensity and nuance. His interpretation of JanáÄek's cycle The Diary of One Who Disappeared earned him major critical recognition, cementing his place among the great tenors of his generation. On stage, he shines in operas such as Billy Budd or Peter Grimes (Britten), La Walkyrie, L'Or du Rhin or Les Maîtres Chanteurs de Nuremberg (Wagner), Jenůfa or Katya Kabanova (JanáÄek), Lulu (Berg) or Benvenuto Cellini (Berlioz). On disc, he records four volumes of Vaughan Williams' songs (2020-2022), then Purcell's Dido and Aeneas under the direction of David Bates (2023), as well as several song recitals including Sparks from Ashes (2025). Alongside his artistic career, Nicky Spence is also a committed teacher and a fervent advocate of access to music for all, involved in numerous educational initiatives and associations.
