Alasdair Fraser, born May 14, 1955, in Clackmannan, Scotland, is a Scottish fiddler known for his contributions to Celtic music. He began playing the violin at age eight and won the National Mod fiddle competition in 1973. Fraser earned a degree in physics from the University of Edinburgh and worked as a petrophysicist before moving to the United States in 1981. He founded the Valley of the Moon Fiddling School in California in 1983 and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, in 1987. Fraser's career includes collaborations with artists such as Jean Redpath, Paul Machlis, Tony McManus, and Itzhak Perlman. He has released several albums, including Dawn Dance (1996), which won the independent award for Best Celtic Album of the Year, and Fire & Grace (2004) with Natalie Haas. Fraser's music has been featured in films like Titanic.
