Biography
Talitha MacKenzie, born on Long Island, New York, is a Scottish-American singer known for her work in world music. She trained as a concert pianist and taught herself Scottish Gaelic from an early age. MacKenzie's first traditional music recordings included contributions to the Boston-Irish band St James Gateâs eponymous album in 1985 and her solo debut Shantyman! under the name Talitha Nelson in 1986. In 1987, she moved to Edinburgh and joined the Scottish folk ensemble Drumalban. The following year, MacKenzie formed Mouth Music with Martin Swan, blending traditional Gaelic songs with electronic beats. Their debut album Mouth Music reached Number 1 on the Billboard Top World Music Albums chart. After parting ways with Swan in 1991, MacKenzie released her solo albums Sòlas and Spiorad.
