Biography

Aki Takase is a Japanese jazz pianist, conductor and writer who began her career after graduating from the prestigious Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo in the late 1970s. She recorded her first LP 'Aki' on the King label in the USA. The early 1980s saw her move to Europe to record and tour with a great deal of work with the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. The 1990s saw Takase collaborating extensively with Portuguese jazz vocalist Maria Joao. She continued to experiment and record, extending her range from pure jazz to include traditional Japanese instrumentation, even performing with the traditional stringed instrument Koto. Continuing into the new millennium, she performed and recorded with Alexander von Schlippenbach, a German band leader, saxophonist and composer. Aside from this work, Takase also lead quintets and quartets performing and recording more than 50 albums as solo artist, leader and sidewoman.
