Biography

Adam Guettel is an American composer and lyricist born on December 16, 1964, in New York City. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by musical theater and opera and for being the grandson of the musician Richard Rodgers. Guettel achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he performed as a boy soprano soloist at the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera. He achieved professional recognition for the musical Floyd Collins (1996), which premiered at the venue Playwrights Horizons and featured the song “The Riddle Song”. His discography included the song cycle Saturn Returns (1998), which was also recorded as Myths and Hymns (1999). Guettel achieved professional recognition for the musical romance The Light in the Piazza (2005), which received two Tony Awards for best original score and best orchestrations. He achieved professional recognition for the studio recording The Light in the Piazza: Original Broadway Cast Recording (2005) and composing the score for the play To Kill a Mockingbird (2018), which received a Tony Award nomination. Guettel achieved professional recognition for the musical Days of Wine and Roses (2024) and serving as an instructor of masterclasses and seminars in songwriting.
