Biography
Ab und Zu, a Norwegian jazz band established in 1987, originally began as the Anne Marie Giørtz Quintet in 1982. The quintet featured siblings Anne-Marie Giørtz on vocals and Ole Henrik Giørtz on piano, along with Vidar Johansen on saxophone, Audun Kleive on drums, and Olaf Kamfjord on bass. Their first release was Breaking Out (1983), followed by Tigers of Pain (1985). The band changed its name to Ab und Zu in 1987 and released their self-titled album Ab und Zu (1989) with new members Paolo Vinaccia on drums and Eivind Aarset on guitar. They performed commissioned works such as Den akustiske skyggen (1993) and Skrapjern og silke (1999), both featuring lyrics by Lars Saabye Christensen. Their subsequent albums include Totally (1996) and Spark of Life (2002). In 2004, they collaborated with the Prime Time Orchestra for the commissioned work Rhymes at Midnight at Sandvika Storbandfestival.
