Biography

With her hit "Je veux" in 2010, Zaz revived French realist-inspired chanson and, with her characteristic gouaille, has continued in this vein with success abroad. Born in Tours on May 1, 1980, Isabelle Geffroy's musical education was marked by jazz and blues. It was during one of her stints in several bands, namely Don Diego, that she chose the pseudonym Zaz, under which she performed in a Paris cabaret in 2006. The following year, in response to songwriter Kerredine Soltani's call for a husky voice, Zaz created her own repertoire and toured extensively, not only in France, but also in Russia, Egypt and Japan. Her debut album, already over a year in the making, was released in May 2010, with the title track "Je veux", which reached No. 2 in France and featured in several other European charts. Her breakthrough track helped the album reach No.1 in France, Belgium and Switzerland, as well as garnering numerous certifications. Awarded a Victoire de la musique, Zaz joins Les Enfoirés and embarks on a tour summarized in the live album Sans Tsu Tsou (2011). Her second studio album Recto Verso (2013, no. 2), featuring the single "On ira" (no. 12) and a track written by Jean-Jacques Goldman ("Si", no. 34), is followed by a tour of Eastern European countries and concerts in the UK and the USA. This international recognition is accompanied by the third album devoted to cover versions, Paris (2014, No. 2), featuring Charles Aznavour, Thomas Dutronc and Nikki Yanofsky. The album also crowned Zaz the following year with the award for Best International Artist at the Echo Awards in Germany. A new live recording and film, Sur la Route (2015), precedes the fourth studio album Effet Miroir (2018, No. 3) and its Spanish-language single "Qué vendrá " (No. 21), in recognition of the artist's popularity in South America, where she performs regularly. After taking part in Tryo's version of "L'Hymne de nos campagnes 2019", Zaz unveils the 2021 album Isa (No. 2), featuring the duet "Le Jardin des larmes" with Till Lindemann, from the German band Rammstein. Following the release of an expanded version in December 2022, the singer returned to the studio to record Sains et Saufs, featuring the single "Je pardonne" written by Noé Preszow and the duet "Une passerelle vers la mer" with Raphaël.
