Yuji Takahashi, born September 21, 1938, in Tokyo, Japan, was a composer and pianist. He began his musical education under Roh Ogura and Minao Shibata at the TÅhÅ Gakuen School of Music, making his debut in 1960 with Bo Nilsson's Quantitaten. Takahashi resided in Europe from 1963 to 1966, collaborating with Iannis Xenakis and premiering works like Herma and Eonta. His first composition, Fonogene, was created in 1962. In the mid-1960s, Takahashi worked with Elliott Carter and Frederic Rzewski and studied computer music. He taught at various institutions, including the University of Indiana and the San Francisco Conservatory, before returning to Japan as an independent composer and pianist. Notable albums include Sonatas And Interludes Vol. 1 (1966) and Metastasis / Pithoprakta / Eonta (1967). Takahashi's career highlights include performances with orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic, as well as collaborations with TÅru Takemitsu. He received a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2006.
