Biography

William Cepeda is an American jazz musician and composer of Puerto Rican origin born on March 27, 1960, in Loíza. He performed on the trombone and the conch shell. Cepeda studied at the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, the Berklee College of Music, and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He collaborated with artists including Donald Byrd, Jimmy Heath, and David Murray. In 1989, Dizzy Gillespie invited Cepeda to join the United Nations Orchestra. He performed with musicians such as Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, and Celia Cruz. In 1992, Cepeda established the Afro-Rican Jazz style, which combined progressive jazz with traditional Puerto Rican roots music. His debut studio recording, My Roots and Beyond, appeared in 1998. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Berklee College in 2013.
