Biography
White Hinterland is the name used by musician, producer and singer Casey Dienel. A native of Massachusetts, she was born in Scituate on March 10, 1985, and took her first piano lessons at the age of four. During her studies, she formed the group The Bong Loads, then moved to Boston to study classical composition at the New England Conservatory for two years. In 2005, she had the opportunity to record her first album, Wind-Up Canary, released the following year under her birth name and already receiving critical acclaim. In 2007, she released the EP Vessels, before taking the name White Hinterland in 2008, coinciding with her debut on the independent label Dead Oceans, which released the album Phylactery Factory, a blend of intimate pop, jazz and electronic sounds. Her experimental style was confirmed with the EP Luniculaire (2009), an exercise in French-language covers, on which she took her own take on Serge Gainsbourg's "Requiem pour un con", Françoise Hardy's "Mon amie la rose" and Brigitte Fontaine's "J'ai 26 ans". This release paved the way for the innovative style of the album Kairos (2010), followed by a tour across the U.S. and Europe. Its opening track, "Icarus", is used in films and TV series. After the album Baby (2014), recorded in the basement studio of the apartment where she grew up, Casey Dienel set about producing Imitation of a Woman to Love (2017), released under her own name.
