Biography
Webley Edwards, born on November 11, 1902 in Corvallis, Oregon, was a World War II news correspondent and radio host. He began his career as an auto salesman and semi-professional football player in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he developed an interest in Native Hawaiian musical traditions. In 1935, Edwards produced Hawaii Calls, a radio show featuring authentic island music, which became a significant part of his career. The show ran for 37 years and included notable releases such as Hawaii Calls: Favorite Instrumentals Of The Islands (1957). Edwards also wrote lyrics to the popular song "Pearly Shells", recorded by artists like Burl Ives and Don Ho. His career extended beyond music, serving as a representative in the Legislature of Hawaii from 1952 to 1966 and as a Hawaiian State Senator from 1966 to 1968. He passed away on October 5, 1977.
