Waylon Malloy Payne, also known as Waylon Payne, was born on April 5, 1972, in Nashville, Tennessee, and is an American country singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. The son of country singer Sammi Smith and guitarist Jody Payne, Waylon Payne began his music career in the clubs of Los Angeles, notably at the King King Club. His debut album, The Drifter, was released in 2004 under Republic/Universal Records after being signed by the label through a recommendation from Pat Green. In addition to his solo work, Payne has contributed to multiple albums as a songwriter and collaborator, including Lee Ann Womack's Hollywood and The Lonely, the Lonesome & the Gone, and Ashley Monroe's Sparrow. Payne also ventured into acting, portraying Jerry Lee Lewis in the 2005 film Walk the Line, for which he won a Grammy Award. He has since appeared in films such as Crazy (2007) and The Identical (2014).
