Walt Levinsky was an American big band and orchestral musician, composer, arranger, and bandleader. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, he began playing clarinet at age nine, studying under his brother Kermit and later with Joe Allard, before attending the Music Conservatory at Lebanon Valley College, where he majored in clarinet. Levinskyâs professional career included early assignments with the Les Elgart orchestra and a stint replacing Buddy DeFranco in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He joined the NBC Staff Orchestra and later The Tonight Show Band in 1962. He composed, arranged, and conducted music for commercials, NBC films, and television, and performed as clarinet soloist with Artie Shawâs re-created band. Levinsky also recorded albums as a leader. He died on December 14, 1999 in Sarasota, Florida.
