Biography

Less well known than his compatriot Bonga, Waldemar Bastos belongs to that generation of Angolan artists forced into exile by the civil war that followed independence in 1975. Taking refuge first in Portugal and then in Brazil, Waldemar Bastos immersed himself in local influences, forging links with Djavan and Chico Buarque. His first album, Estamos Juntos, came out in 1983, followed by Angola Minha Namorada (1989), and Pitanga Madura (1992). Waldemar Bastos finally achieved international acclaim with his 1997 album Pretaluz , released on the Luaka Bop label. Since the early twenties, Waldemar Bastos has kept a low profile, dividing his time between Lisbon and Angola. Classics of My Soul, released in May 2012, once again highlights the voice and sensitivity of a rare artist.
