Maria Amélia Salazar Muge, known as Amélia Muge, was born on February 7, 1952, in Maputo, Mozambique. She is a Portuguese singer and instrumentalist who began her musical journey with piano lessons and theater groups, influenced by her father and later by the protest singer José Afonso. After moving to Portugal following Mozambique's independence in 1975, she studied art history and design. Muge's breakthrough came with her first single "Múgica" (1992), which gained significant attention at Portuguese universities. She collaborated with Júlio Pereira on various albums and tours, and later worked with José Mário Branco on the album Maio Maduro Maio (1995). Her solo album, Taco a Taco, was released in 1998 and won the José Afonso Prize. Throughout her career, Muge has blended traditional Portuguese and African music with modern elements, incorporating texts from notable authors like Fernando Pessoa and José Saramago.
