Biography

The Vienna Art Orchestra, a jazz group based in Vienna, Austria, was founded in 1977 by Mathias Rüegg. The ensemble's size varied from big band to smaller formations and included notable members such as saxophonists Wolfgang Puschnig and Harry Sokal, and tubist Jon Sass. Their debut album Jessas Na! was released in 1979. Throughout the 1980s, they released several albums including Tango From Obango (1980) and The Minimalism of Erik Satie (1984). The group disbanded briefly at the end of the decade but reformed in 1992 with a reduced lineup. Notable releases from this period include Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love (1999), Artistry In Rhythm (2000), and A Centenary Journey (2001). The Vienna Art Orchestra was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in 2001 for All That Strauss and in 2003 for Art & Fun. Their final concert took place on July 9, 2010.
