Biography

Victoria began her career as a professional singer and dancer at an early age, taking part in numerous touring troupes and even appearing in King Vidor's film Hallelujah. Much more of a variety than a blues singer, Victoria was nevertheless imperial in her compositions "Black Snake Blues" and "T.B. Blues", which have become classics. She set up her own label, Spivey, in 1962, recording all the young New York talent, including Bob Dylan, who made his recording debut. Her work, rich in imagery, certainly deserves a reappraisal.
