Biography

Big Jack Johnson, born Jack N. Johnson on July 30, 1940 in Lambert, Mississippi, was an American electric blues musician and guitarist. He began his musical journey playing with his father's band before transitioning to the electric guitar. In 1962, Johnson formed the Jelly Roll Kings and the Nighthawks with Sam Carr and Frank Frost, releasing two albums: Hey Boss Man (1962) and My Back Scratcher (1966). His first solo album, The Oil Man, was released in 1987, followed by Daddy, When is Mama Comin Home? (1989). Johnson notably performed "Catfish Medley" with Samuel L. Jackson on the soundtrack of the film Black Snake Moan (2006). He won a W.C. Handy Award in 2003 for Best Acoustic Blues Album and posthumously received a plaque on the Clarksdale Walk of Fame in August 2011. Johnson passed away on March 14, 2011.
