Biography

Ultramagnetic MCs were formed in 1984 in the Bronx, New York, by Kool Keith (born 1968), with Ced Gee, TR Love and Moe Love as founding members; the group later added Big D as a hype man and Tim Dog as an unofficial collaborator. Their first single, "To Give You Love", appeared on the Diamond International label in 1985, followed by "Ego Trippin" on Next Plateau in 1986, which introduced the “Synthetic Substitution” drum break that would become one of hip‑hop’s most sampled loops. In 1988 the group released their debut album Critical Beatdown, a new‑school classic that showcased unorthodox sampling, polysyllabic rhymes, and experimental production techniques. Subsequent releases included Funk Your Head Up (1992, Mercury/PolyGram), The Four Horsemen (1993, Wild Pitch), and a compilation of unreleased material in 1994. After a temporary breakup in 1990, the group returned to the scene and released The Best Kept Secret in 2007 under DMAFT, though key members such as TR Love were absent. Throughout their career, Ultramagnetic MCs influenced the Golden Era of sampling, contributed to the rise of East‑Coast rap, and earned recognition for pioneering “chopped” samples and James Brown‑inspired beats. The group continued to release singles and compilations into the 2020s.
