Biography

Tracy Bonham is an American singer, songwriter and violinist born on March 27, 1967 in Boston, Massachusetts. She is best known for her success in the 1990s, when her violin playing blended alternative rock, power pop and classical influences. After studying classical music at the Boston Conservatory, she turned to rock and signed a contract with Island Records. Her debut album, The Burdens of Being Upright (1996), contains her biggest alternative hit, "Mother Mother", a powerful, emotional song that earned her a Grammy nomination.Her music is characterized by expressive vocals, a dynamic blend of electric guitars and violin, and heartfelt, introspective songwriting. Throughout her career, Tracy Bonham has explored different styles, oscillating between alternative rock, folk and pop. She continues to write, record and tour, cultivating an audience thanks to her authenticity and stage energy, buoyed by the following albums Down Here (2000), Blink the Brightest (2005), Masts of Manhatta (2010) and the diptych Making Heads & Tails of Wax & Gold / Wax & Gold in 2015. The release of Modern Burdens in 2017 was followed by Sky Too Wide in 2025.
