Alanis Morissette, born June 1, 1974 in Ontario, Canada, started early, learning the piano at six and writing songs by ten. She joined the cast of kid's show sketch comedy show You Can't Do That on Television, which provided her with the finances to release her first single âFate Stay with Meâ. By 16, she had already recorded two pop albums, before moving to LA. She signed to Madonnaâs Maverick label, and in 1995 she released Jagged Little Pill. The albumâs mix of hard-edges rock and folk ballads stood in stark was a smash. It made her a superstar, selling over thirty million copies worldwide and hitting Number 1 in the US and in her native Canada. In addition to garnering four Grammys it spun off three top 10 US singles and four Canadian chart-toppers including âHand in My Pocketâ and âIronicâ. 1998âs Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and 2002âs Under Rug Swept also both topped the Canadian and US album charts, though their singles did not make as big an impact on the charts with only 1998âs âThank Youâ and 2002âs âHands Cleanâ hitting the US top 40, though both went to Number 1 in Canada. Three more albums of new material would come out over the next ten years, but then there would be an eight-year layoff before Such Pretty Forks in the Road in July of 2020.
