Biography
Torgrim Sollid, born on June 17, 1942, in Stor-Elvdal Municipality, Norway, is a self-taught traditional folk musician and jazz trumpeter. He began his career as a drummer with the Veitvet Big Band and joined the Jan Garbarek Quartet (1962â63). Sollid then collaborated with Erling Aksdal Sextet on the project Ãsterdalsmusikk (1974), which has been described as "mountain jazz". He founded and led the big band Søyr in Trondheim from 1976 onwards, releasing several albums. Sollid also contributed to Warne Marsh Sextet's albums Sax of a Kind (1983) and For the Time Being (1987), and performed at the Oslo Jazzfestival in 1995 with Sidsel Endresen. He was associated with the jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (Trondheim Music Conservatory) and taught jazz trumpet at Norges Musikkhøgskole (Norwegian Academy of Music), contributing to Norway's jazz education.
