Biography

Tony Overwater is a Dutch jazz bassist and composer born March 24, 1965, in Rotterdam. He graduated from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in 1989 and established the ensemble Scapes that same year. Overwater collaborated with Sunny Murray and David Murray, and his recording career included the album A Sanctuary Within (1992). He performed with the Yuri Honing Trio for over two decades. Overwater’s work involved a crossover of jazz, Arab, and early music, collaborating with performers including Rima Khcheich and Kinan Azmeh. In 2013, he founded the series Salon Joussour to connect Middle Eastern and European musicians. He also composed music for children’s stories and silent films, including Metropolis (1992). Overwater received the Boy Edgar Award in 2002. His album Op (2001) received an Edison Award, and he earned a gold record for Kikker Swingt (2003) in 2008.
