Biography

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 10, 1959, singer, songwriter, producer, and label exec Kenneth Edmonds is better known by his stage name, Babyface. Since the late 1980s, he has bee is one of the most influential figures in modern R&B, a jack of all trades whose work has defined the sound of contemporary soul for over four decades. However, his career began in the late 1970s as a member of Indianapolis funk group Manchild. Moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, he became a founding member of early 1980s smooth R&B group The Deele, where he met his longtime musical collaborator Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid. Babyface’s solo breakthrough came with Tender Lover (1989), followed by multi-platinum releases including For the Cool in You (1993) and The Day (1996), establishing his signature blend of smooth vocals and emotionally resonant songwriting. Beyond his own releases, Babyface’s legacy is defined by his extraordinary work behind the scenes. He has written and produced numerous R&B and pop hits for artists such as Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, and Toni Braxton, helping shape the sound of the 1990s and beyond. A multi-Grammy Award winner and co-founder of LaFace Records, Babyface remains a cornerstone of modern R&B—an architect of timeless love songs whose influence continues to resonate across generations.
