Biography

Tom Jans was an American folk singer-songwriter and guitarist who was born in Yakima, Washington, in 1948. He achieved early professional recognition in 1970 after forming a duo with Mimi Fariña and is famous for the track “Loving Arms” (1973). Jans rejection of a graduate scholarship to Columbia University to pursue a music career led him to the San Francisco coffeehouse scene, where he was introduced to Fariña by Joan Baez. The duo toured as a supporting act for Cat Stevens and James Taylor and released the studio recording Take Heart (1971). After relocating to Nashville, Jans became a songwriter for the Irving/Almo publishing house. His discography includes the eponymous studio recording Tom Jans (1974) and the studio recordings The Eyes of an Only Child (1975), Dark Blonde (1976), and Champion (1982). His composition “Out of Hand” (1975) became a country hit for Gary Stewart. Jans died in 1984.
