Tiziano Tononi, born on November 18, 1956 in Milan, Italy, is an Italian percussionist, composer, and founding member of the Italian Instabile Orchestra. He initially taught himself to play drums and performed rock music before transitioning to avant-garde jazz. In 1978, after meeting Andrew Cyrille, Tononi studied percussion with him in New York City. His career took off when he joined the orchestra of La Scala for classical performances. Notable albums include Ketchup (1995) with Giovanni Maier and Awake Nu (A Tribute to Don Cherry), Vol. 1 & 2 (1996). He has also collaborated extensively with Daniele Cavallanti, forming the free jazz duo Udu Calls.
